How to Grow Parsnips
Growing Parsnips = Easy
Growing parsnips is popular, as they produce a large volume of produce in a small space, store for a long period, and grow in almost any gardening climate.
For Growing Parsnips:
- Well drained soil, deeply tilled. (Sandy soil is best.)
- Full sun or part shade location.
- Prior to planting, enrich the soil with compost, well rotted manure, or fertilizer.
How to Grow Parsnips
- Test the soil. Soils with pH levels of 5.5-7.5 are best for growing parsnips. (Improve the soil, if necessary.)
- When you plant parsnips will depend upon your climate.
Cold climates: plant from spring to early summer.
Plant parsnip seeds in rows 16" apart, 1/4” deep. Germination can take a little while, so be patient.
Temperate climates: plant from midwinter to mid-autumn.
Subtropical climates: plant in autumn to winter.
- Keep the soil moist until the seedlings appear (but not sopping wet).
- Water regularly throughout the season.
- Harvest when the roots are about 3 inches wide (usually takes around 4 months or so).
Note: You'll find that the flavor is best if you can wait until after several weeks of frost to harvest.
