How to Grow Parsnips
Growing Parsnips = Easy

Growing parsnips is popular, as they produce a large volume of produce in a small space, store for a long period, and grow in almost any gardening climate.

For Growing Parsnips:

How to Grow Parsnips

  1. Test the soil.  Soils with pH levels of 5.5-7.5 are best for growing parsnips. (Improve the soil, if necessary.)

  2. When you plant parsnips will depend upon your climate.

Cold climates: plant from spring to early summer.
Temperate climates: plant from midwinter to mid-autumn.
Subtropical climates: plant in autumn to winter.

Plant parsnip seeds in rows 16" apart, 1/4” deep. Germination can take a little while, so be patient.

  3. Keep the soil moist until the seedlings appear (but not sopping wet).

  4. Water regularly throughout the season.

  5. Harvest when the roots are about 3 inches wide (usually takes around 4 months or so).

Note: You'll find that the flavor is best if you can wait until after several weeks of frost to harvest.
