How to Grow Spinach
Growing Spinach = Moderately Easy
Growing spinach in your vegetable garden is fairly easy and trouble free, if you take a little time to prepare the soil properly first.
For Growing Spinach:
- Well drained soil.
- Grows best in cool climates (or cooler gardening seasons).
- Sun or part-sun location in the garden.
- Soil that has been very amply enriched with compost, well rotted manure, and/or fertilizer.
How to Grow Spinach
- Test the soil. Garden soil with a pH level of 6.0-7.0 is best for growing spinach. (Improve the soil, if necessary.)
- In early spring, (around two weeks before planting), work in a healthy supply of compost (or similar) material into the vegetable garden bed.
- Plant spinach in shallow rows that are 14 inches apart. The seeds should be planted 1/4 inch deep and 4 inches apart. Cover the seeds lightly with soil. (Plant a new row every 3 weeks in the spring, for an extended harvest.)
- Gently water the rows (a hose setting of mist or light shower is best) to help avoid washing the seeds away. Keep the soil moist (but not sopping wet).
- Spinach seedlings should appear within three weeks. Continue to water so that the soil is kept moist and doesn't dry out.
- Fertilize weekly by watering in a dose of liquid fertilizer (compost tea, liquid kelp).
- Harvest spinach by picking at will, once it reaches the size you like.
