How to Grow Spinach

Growing Spinach = Moderately Easy

Growing spinach in your vegetable garden is fairly easy and trouble free, if you take a little time to prepare the soil properly first.

For Growing Spinach:

How to Grow Spinach

  1. Test the soil.  Garden soil with a pH level of 6.0-7.0 is best for growing spinach. (Improve the soil, if necessary.)

  2. In early spring, (around two weeks before planting), work in a healthy supply of compost (or similar) material into the vegetable garden bed.

  3. Plant spinach in shallow rows that are 14 inches apart. The seeds should be planted 1/4 inch deep and 4 inches apart. Cover the seeds lightly with soil. (Plant a new row every 3 weeks in the spring, for an extended harvest.)

  4. Gently water the rows (a hose setting of mist or light shower is best) to help avoid washing the seeds away. Keep the soil moist (but not sopping wet).

  5. Spinach seedlings should appear within three weeks. Continue to water so that the soil is kept moist and doesn't dry out.

  6. Fertilize weekly by watering in a dose of liquid fertilizer (compost tea, liquid kelp).

  7. Harvest spinach by picking at will, once it reaches the size you like.
